Another interesting prompt–Clerihew. It’s a whimsical, four-line biographical poem. So, as a Bengali and as Indian we have few colorful characters. I’m taking my takes on four such personalities and a popular animated character to write clerihews on. I’ve also attached few line bio on each character to know them better along with events or facts that I’ve referred to in my clerihew on them for your, my reader, conveniences.
Amongst Bengali a name of valor
Whom he loved or who loved him matter of question
But w’ever it is all lent a shade to poems of him out of question
Our own indigenous Cap’n Haddock
All his movies are treated as trash, flop,
Posthumously e’one take a ride on the flop
Our mothers crooned on the persona of Uttam Kumar
He had changed the Bengali movies at its grammar
Did he love Mrs. Sen, shhh, never says that never ask that
Did he teach us to love, ooh yeah, you can ask w’out hesitation that
The first Prime Minister he was, Jawaharlal Nehru
His birthday is Childrens’ Day, e’one lovingly call him Chacha Nehru
He had an affair with Lady Mountbatten…oh you are talking shit…I heard saying
He had a role in the plane crash of …oh you are on again…I heard follow by whispering
He is you, he is me, he is the Common Man
Clad in dhoti and a plaid jacket, he look like any other man
He is silent observer to many events, a lot of things
When he speak don’t say you said it (so take care of your deeds and sayings)
#1 Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali icon as well a well known and respected at the same time a persona who reshaped the Bengali literature. He had a lot of affairs which we Bengali talk with valor and at the same time hesitate to talk on.
#2 Ritwick Ghatak was the prolific filmmaker who depicts the social picture of the aftermath of Bengal Partition. He was contemporary of Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen whose movies doesn’t get noticed and most of the time overshadowed by others during his lifetime. He has been notoriously remembered for his drinking habit also.
#3 Arun Kumar Chatterjee better known as Uttam Kumar was another Bengali icon well known for his movies as the actor. He had been active for three decades–1950s to 1970s. He is considered as the Matinee Idol of Bengali movies of that era and women used to go weak at their knees, a popular woman lore, whenever he came to the scene. It was and is the debatable topic of his relationship with his co-star Aparna Sen.
#4 Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, had many debatable and discussed stories attached to him. Like an affair with Lady Mountbatten, participation in the assassination of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and its cover-up, etc. All these speak with great care and under the breath for their sensibility in terms of political as well as cultural aspects.
#5 The Common Man is a cartoon character created by Indian author and cartoonist R.K. Laxman (1921-2016) for the comic strip “You Said It” in 1951 for The Times of India. Through the character, R.K. Laxman used to take his picks on the social-political scenarios of the passing time in a comical satirical manner.
